Hypostyle Architects Glasgow Edinburgh

National Library of Scotland

Located on the rooftop of a major listed building at the heart of Edinburgh's World Heritage Centre, this project was both challenging and sensitive. Hypostyle designed this ingenious rooftop extension to create much needed office and meeting room space - offering superb views over the rooftops to Arthur's Seat and the River Forth.

Given that the site is some 15 storeys above the ground, Hypostyle's major logistical challenge was to execute the project from a very cramped access courtyard. Added to this was the client's severe restrictions on both construction methods and working hours, imposed because of the location beside both the Library's main reading room and the High Court.

Hypostyle overcome all of these challenges to create a thoroughly modern office environment in one of Edinburgh's most famous public buildings.
