Hypostyle Architects Glasgow Edinburgh

Woodhall Community Centre

Hypostyle were appointed in early 2010 by River Clyde Homes and Woodhall Community Association to develop a feasibility study for a new Community Facility.  The area is currently undergoing a period of residential masterplanning; with a local community hub identified as key to the success of this long term.

The design focuses around a central hall, with flexibility a key driver in the overall scheme.  A network of support spaces further utilise views and access patterns, including youth, office, meeting and shop/café space, which can overlap as required.  The building is entered from the South from a landscaped public area, with the single storey entrance façade reflecting the residential context and the steep site fall utilised by the double height hall, tucking storage under the entrance and opening up views over the River Clyde.  Glazed circulation zones articulate the spaces, creating strong visual connections through the building.

The client championed BREEAM Excellence from the outset, with the building utilising Green Roof technology, site retention, PV panels, solar shading, ground source heating, grey water recycling, and locally sourced materials.  Throughout, Hypostyle were closely involved in working with a specialist regeneration consultant to formulate a study that took cognisance of the funding gateways available for such a facility.  The study also included outline costing.

Community and local area consultation was key to the process, with Hypostyle also sourcing ‘case study’ examples from other communities.  The result was the development of a strong brief and design, enabling the design to address site, sustainability, and flexibility of use, aiming to meet the needs of Woodhall over time.
