Hypostyle were appointed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to coordinate the design and construction of a three-storey extension to the Southern General Maternity Hospital in Glasgow. The works would initiate the first stage of the £750 million redevelopment of the Southern General Hospital site.

Our design of the 7500sqm extension included twelve new delivery rooms – including two with birthing pool facilities, two operating theatres, recovery rooms, a new ‘Neonatal Intensive Care Unit’ with space for thirty-four cots, a new ‘Special Care Baby Unit’ with space for twenty-six cots, additional flexible rooms and staff office accommodation.

The external cladding of the extension showcases a relationship between high-quality materials, such as sandstone ashlar, powder-coated aluminium louvers and stainless-steel mesh panels acting as a brise-soleil solar-shading feature.

In addition to the extension works, Hypostyle led the refurbishment of the existing Foetal Medicine Department to improve services, fixtures and fittings in compliance with current Health Technical Memoranda requirements. Hypostyle also completed subsequent works of a new ‘Maternity Assessment Unit’ (value: £2.5 million) and an enhanced corridor link (value: £2 million) between the Maternity Unit and the Royal Hospital for Children.

The Southern General Maternity Hospital was adopted in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in 2015.
